The Reality of Television

Is there anything more boring than reality TV.

I have to say, that I just don't understand it. How does 12 people living in confined quarters and doing all sorts of tasks constitute reality. The situations are contrived and it's pretty much a "lets see who can shock the public the most" contest with the contestants in a prison (well lets face it a prison made of gold is still a prison).

To me there are one or two exceptions, Talent shows and shows that have a true competitive edge, where the winner has something to be famous or know for. I will have to admit that I do sit and watch the occasional episode of the odd talent show every once is a while.

I read a book about 2 years ago and I read it again a few weeks ago. Its called Dead Famous by a British comedian called Ben Elton. It basically looks into the whole ethos of reality tv, but as its a piece of fiction, there is, believe it or not a murder with millions of witnesses, and no leads.

The book is brilliant. The social commentary on fame, money and greed breaks down the truth behind reality television. Programs like Big Brother, (which started in the Netherlands
by endemol) are not social experiments! Despite what the producers would have you believe, they are a way to get ratings and therefore advertising and there for revenue. So no matter what way you look at it from the producers and TV channels point of view it's all down to money.

Then the contestants!! They always leave me wondering WHY? Why would they put themselves through all that. FAME, they think that they are just so extra special that they will make it past the 14 weeks of the show. Now in all honesty, from all the reality TV shows, how many of the contestants are remembered.

Now don't get me wrong, they make some money by selling their story, and there is not a thing wrong with that. I just hope they don't believer their own press.

The truth is, not matter how boring I personally think reality television is, I can see it's appeal. There you are in the comfort of your own home, watching people doing cringe worthy things, being betrayed by other contestants, and taking it all so seriously, and you just can't not look.

The voyeurism is so compulsive. We know better, we are smart intelligent people so why can't we look away. WHY?
